Walking School Bus 10 Year Anniversary
10-4-23 “Let’s Move It”
On Wednesday, October 4th, at 7am, Fairhope's Walking School Bus (WSB) celebrated its 10th Anniversary on the front lawn of Coastal Alabama Community College's downtown Fairhope campus on Fairhope Avenue. This celebration coincided with International Walk to School Day.
In addition to celebrating this remarkable 10th anniversary milestone, fitness classes and health enthusiasts came together and participated in a collective high energy pep rally to encourage fitness awareness for kids and adults of all ages. Members of the community joined the festivities and found a fitness group that could help them meet their more active lifestyle goals. Demonstrations and printed information were available from the participating groups and individuals.
Approximately 125 students & adults participated in the pep rally as they strolled past the campus on their walk to the Fairhope West Elementary campus. Smoothies and home baked mini muffins were available for the attendees. Fairhope High School cheerleaders helped pump up the energy to high-powered workout music while numerous costumed characters entertained the crowd.
Everyone loved the large cardboard anniversary cake - with faces of walking students - that was then displayed in the Fairhope West cafeteria. Students loved the Pirate footballs, #10 foot beads, and the small pom-poms that they could shake to the music!
Many special guests attended such as Mayor Sullivan, city council members, school board member Cecil Christenberry, Coastal Campus Director Mandy Bezeredi, Fairhope West Principal Jenny Breazeale, and Baldwin County Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Renee Carter.
We also welcomed WSB alumni including 2 high school juniors who participated in the 2013 pilot year of the WSB.
There were two TV stations present to report on this high energy event as well as two professional photographers. The photos and recordings give a good idea of how special this event was for the WSB Community.
Special thanks to Rene Mashburn for being the mastermind and creative genius behind the high energy, community engaged celebration for the WSB’s 10th anniversary! Rene created a pep rally that truly honored the WSB. Her vision and enthusiasm brought the community together in amazing ways!
